COPYRIGHT

                                          INTRODUCTION TO COPYRIGHT

1.Copyright is a law that protects the intellectual property of a creator. This law protects works such as;

music,
websites
drama
art

as well as many others

Copyrighting your work as a creator is of high importance. This is because without copyright anything you have created can be stolen without any legal action taken against the individual who took your creation

According to UK copyright law, a work is considered original if its creator uses skill, labour, judgement and effort to create it. Using another’s work is copyright infringement when ‘the work as a whole or any substantial part of it’ has been copied.

2. HOW DOES COPYRIGHT PROTECT YOUR WORK

Copyright protects your work by preventing people from pirating or stealing it to use for the following

• copying your work

• distributing copies of it, whether free of charge or for sale

• renting or lending copies of your work

• performing, showing or playing your work in public

• making an adaptation of your work

• putting it on the internet

3. HOW DO I COPYRIGHT MY WORK

• Make Sure Your Work Is Eligible for Copyright

Before you file a copyright registration, it’s important to make sure you’re eligible. If you produce something for an employer, it should already be covered under their copyright, so you don’t need to get copyright protection with the United States Copyright Office.

• File a Copyright Registration Application

The next step is an easy application that anyone can do. When your original work is ready to be copyrighted, you can find the copyright registration application on copyright.gov. Registering your copyright is also important if you need to file a lawsuit for copyright infringement. The filing fee for copyright registration ranges from $35 to $55.

• File a Copy of the Copyrighted Material

With your copyright registration application, you need to include a copy of the material you want to copyright.

4. HOW LONG DOES COPYRIGHT LAST

There are varying durations for copyrighting works. Some works and the copyright durations have been listed below;

• Literary music and dramatic works - 70 years from the creation of the work until the death of the author

• Sound Recordings- 50 years from the year in which the sound recording was made

• Films- 70 years after the death of the last surviving author

5 . HOW TO STOP PEOPLE FROM USING YOUR WORK

If someone has infringed your copyright you could contact them directly, consider mediation, or seek legal advice. If you decide to take legal action, there are a number of remedies that you can seek from the court.

The infringer can give a promise, known as an undertaking, that they will license the work from you, under terms that you agree.

  2. Thank you for correcting the formatting. You need to make sure that any quotation which you use are clearly referenced. Here you have quoted laws, and paraphased your understanding of the law, but you have not added any reference to where you read these laws.
    When rewriting from a website, paraphrasing is often a better option than quoting. Paraphrasing is incorporating someone else's idea — including legal precedent — into your own writing by describing the idea and citing its source. But in describing the idea, you use your own words.
    You also need to add a list of references to the websties you read for this information
