LANDSCAPE INSPIRATION/ IDEAS INTO RESEARCH

LANDSCAPE INSPIRATION WHILST     WALKING ON CAMPUS

On Friday, I left the library at 5am and decided to take some pictures of the environment on campus and the areas near campus. Looking back I realized I can implement some of these designs into my project which are units of social housing blocks.

New Cromwell is an area which was  burnt to the ground due to devastating wild fires which rendered people homeless. Therefore, rebuilding it with the incorporation of nature is a good way to revive the landscape.

Horizon Apartments which is the name of my project will features lawns located in the perimeter of the residential zone. The picture above is off the entrance point of the Kimberlin library. The lawn is well trimmed with edges on the side at well. I plan on including this design in my project. There is also a light pole on the left of the picture. At nigh time the light is turned on to aid students in staff in accurate navigation. It will be a good idea to include it on the open spaces at the Horizon. This is because at night children, parents and other individuals may want to enjoy the scenery and placing these light poles around the premises will make it easier to see. It is also a good design addition for security purposes. This will enable the security men at the Horizon to guard residents and spot any abnormalities.

This walkway is in between the Queen's, Building and the  Vijay Patel Art and Design Department. It features paved walkways to prevent pedestrians from getting their shoes muddy or dirty. the middle, there are shrub like plants placed there to enhance the landscape. What stood out was the lights which were placed at the base of the pavements. These lights will enable pedestrians to see at night and it also beautifies the landscape as can be seen in the picture. I plan on including the design in that of the Horizon apartments. On the right side you can also see the light poles I described in the paragraph above. It has been placed in a linear form right at the edges of the pedestrian walkway which guides passers by in the night.  A walkway similar to this will be designed for the Horizon Apartments. Since there will be four blocks each block will have a walkway leading to the entrance.

This walkway is on my way back to my accommodation. in this picture, Court Ben Russell Court can be seen on the left side with a parking machine in the middle, a car on the right and trees at the far right side. Horizon Apartments will have underground parking hence this parking design will not be included. However, you can see the trees on the right which have been lined in a linear form right at the side of the road. I plan on including a similar layout in the design of the Horizon Apartments. There will be roads that will lead into and out of the underground parking. Therefore, including trees at the sides of the road will enhance the layout. It will also contribute to balancing the natural scape which is in a heavy imbalance due to the wildfires. There will also be walkways beside the roads like the one which you can see in the picture above. The Horizon Apartments will have walkways with a more modern flare to it as well as aesthetic materials to beautify the area.  Not every resident will have a car hence those who are pedestrians will be able to use the walkway in and out of the Horizon Compound.

There are many more designs yet to spring up but this is a start to it. My next post will feature the colour-themed designs for the Horizon Apartments so stay tuned.

In class I wrote on my intitial ideas and transformed it into research. The link to the document can be accessed below
