MAJOR PROJECT RESEARCH

                                       PROJECT RESEARCH

Subject Area:  Architecture

Project Title: Recreational Centre Development

Project Aims and Objectives:

My Architecture project design is going to be an indoor deconstructivism-themed recreational center. This centre will be big enough to facilitate 20000 people. Construction materials that will be utilized are going to be sustainable and less harmful to the environment. The centre will be located away from Central Business Districts and City Centre's. It will be located in a serene area on the outskirts of town for customers to have an enjoyable and relaxed time at the centre. The indoor recreational centre will have facilities such as an indoor swimming pool, indoor basketball court, and indoor football field as well as a high-tech virtual reality centre and arcade for an extraordinary gaming experience. There will also be a spa and cosmetic room for individuals to relax and release stress.  I will also create a mood board to outline the whole process of the project. This project will be completed by the deadline at the beginning of December.

I will be researching the following designers / Architectures:

MAIN ARCHITECT MY RESEARCH IS GOING TO BE BASED ON THE ARCHITECTS AND FIRMS BELOW

                                                              ZAHA HADID

Deconstructivism, as defined in the exhibition texts, is referred to architecture that married the aesthetic of modernism with the radical geometry of the Russian avant-garde. For Zaha Hadid, this approach was particularly significant, it allowed her to explore the types of forms employed by the Russian structuralist painters she idolised, including Kazimir Malevich and Vladimir Tatlin.

Inspired by Russian Painters

The fascination began in 1970, while Zaha Hadid was studying at the Architectural Association of  London. The Association at that time was a hotbed of ideas, but Zaha Hadid was part of a rebellion calling for a greater focus on drawing as a tool for conceptual development.

With the support of then-director Alvin Boyarsky- who remained a close friend up until he died in 1990- she led the charge for a more radical approach to architectural expression

3.     Target audience –

T   The target audience is teens between the ages of 10-18 as well as adults ( 19-60)

Services and well constructed systems will also be offered to the physically challenged to ensure they reap maximum benefits.

However, this business is not a charity organization hence, individuals who do not pay will not be offered services.

There will be standard services as well as premium services rendered on the premises. Therefore, customers will be adviced to select a package they can pay for.

5.       Style of architecture

I will incorporate a blend of deconstructivism and modern Architecture  into my budling design. This includes the interior and the exterior of the building

Deconstructivism is an idea of dismantling or disrupting the notion of pure form, however,  another point of deconstructivism is to allow the clients to explore their ideal structural designs that they want to display on their building and integrate them into one constructed structure.

Features of Deconstructivism

Non-linear forms. Architects who follow this movement use circles, unequal polygons or triangles.
Juxtaposition of elements. The deconstructivism uses the contrast between forms to achieve the effect he is looking for.
Manipulation of the surface. Buildings appear to be frozen in time and almost no ornamentation is used to give a sense of non-connectedness.
Breaking the rules. Another characteristic that we observe is the sensation of lack of structural stability and the feeling of collapse.

6.      Site plan analysis

180,000 square feet

The building will have an east-west orientation to utilize solar energy efficiently and to its maximum effect during cold climatic seasons.

The building will have 5 floors with a wide diameter. Hence it will be more of a horizontally shaped building than vertical.

In the UK especially coastal areas, the soil consists of sand, clay and marsh

7.      Construction technologies and materials

The basic building materials used in building will be cement, metal, concrete, natural durable wood, clay tile

Paint with a lesser percentage of Volatile Organic Compounds. Using paint with a low composition in VOC reduces the amount of chemicals and toxic compounds that evaporate into the atmosphere.. These compounds can also evaporate indoors and if paint high in VOC is used this leads to indoor air quality problems. However, when more water based paints are utilized, such problems will be avoided

Coastal projects are one of the most difficult projects take up as an architect. This is because of issues such as the volatility of the soil and the high salt content in the sea that can rust and easily corrode buildings. Some other problems that are coupled with building by the coast are;

  • Constant Humidity
  • Wind Driven Rain
  • Fluctuating Tides
  • Occasional Floods

BUILDING NEAR COSTAL REGIONS CAN BE A TUSSLE, HOWEVER I HAVE OUTLINED METHODS IN WHICH THESE PROBLEMS CAN BE TACKLED.

i. Effective and state of the art water drainage system

ii. Sliding Window System

iii. Walls to fight waves

iv Planting of Mangroves

v. Inbuilt Tsunami protection in walls

vi. Pier Foundation System

   8.  Environment

These are some examples of Recreational Centres built in Coastal Regions

i. The Pyramids Centre which is located in Portsmouth

ii  Newquay Water World

iii.  Located in Newquay in the South of the United Kingdom

9.  Form and function

  • The building is supposed to serve as a multipurpose and multifunctional centre where individuals living in the local community as well as tourists can spend their time.

  •      This leisure and recreational centre will also offer customers a warm environment which will shield them from the cold UK climate. There will be 24/7 security surveillance to ensure customers are always safe.

  •      The main reason behind this project is to develop more centres with   mutiple side attractions. With the success of the recreational centre, I will succeed at creating a mini leisure universe where customers can thrive and submerge themselves into a world of endless entertainment

  •        Selecting a coastal region will also give the centre a beautiful and           sophisticated  landscape. The exterior will also serve as an exotic eye grabbing Architecture piece with the interior as well boasting of high end  technology and a modernized touch

  •        A centre like this will invite many tourists leading to the promotion of the business. This will also make the town and the country at Large widely known. In the long run, it will leaf to an enlargement of the customer base, due to the good services rendered as well as an increase in revenue earned by the Government.
