Auckland Art Gallery New Zealand

                                        RESEARCH ON ART GALLERIES

                          AUCKLAND ART GALLERY, NEW ZEALAND

The Auckland Art Gallery in New Zealand is a prominent and well-known Gallery amongst the citizens of this country. It is one of the oldest Art Galleries as it was established in the year 1887. The Architects who designed the initial structure were John Harry Grainger and Charles D'Ebro. It was later redesigned into a contemporary building by Archimedia and FJMT Architects and was reopened in 2011.

The building has a canopy-like structure at the forefront made from kauri wood. The wood is carved into various geometric shapes to produce a synchronized pattern that blends in with the environment. The structure is situated in Albert Park, hence, the see-through glass windows allow tourists to admire both the natural scenery on the outside and the artwork in the building. The canopies have inbuilt lights which when turned on at night give the wooden canopies beautiful highlights.

Since it is a contemporary structure, the building has an open floor plan which provides a large space in which art exhibits can be displayed and conferences as well as meetings can be held. There is an open space rooftop that gives visitors a beautiful view of the pohutukawa trees in the Albert Park

I chose this building because my project for this term is an Art gallery and this building is also an art gallery which was built using sustainable means, hence, this will serve as one of the guides towards my project. This landmark in Auckland exhibits a perfect execution of contemporary Architecture. This was done by;

  • Providing open spaces which make it easy for visitors to admire the scenery.

  • The use of geometric shapes for the roofing as well as the structure which makes the building a wonder to behold and not just a boring structure.

  • Large glass windows which make use of natural light. This makes it easy to conserve energy since natural light from the sun is being used.

  • Minimalism is the main feature of the Art gallery. This is because making the structure overly complicated will take concentration away from the main purpose which is the exhibition of art.

  • The use of kauri wood for the canopies and plywood and plywood for the columns is an excellent depiction of sustainable use of materials.

All these features of the Art gallery enable me to understand what is required to make the construction and design of an art gallery a success. I will surely incorporate some of this into the planning process of my project and even introduce more features through consecutive research. I will do all this to make sure my project is a success.
