                  BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF ANDY WARHOL

ANDY WARHOL

Andy Warhol was born on the 6th of August 1928 in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. He began his professional career when he moved to New York to become a commercial artist. Andy Warhol was enigmatic and was one of the most important artists of the 20th Century ( Wright, 2020).
Andy Warhol was not just an artist, he also worked in the film and music industry which made him a well-rounded public figure. He made several artworks such as Marylin Diptych, Campbell's Soup Cans, Green Coca-Cola Bottles, Cow Paper and Triple Elvis.

In the year 1973, he began experiencing painful gallstones but did not receive treatment due to his fear of medical centres( Bockris,1989). Years after, he underwent several tests and it was concluded that he had a severe gallbladder infection. In the year 1987, he underwent a successful surgery. Sadly he suffered a heart arrhythmia which led to his demise at the age of 58

The theme of my project is pop art and since Andy Warhol is known for his prominent artwork, I conducted research into his several artworks and received inspiration from a well-known piece Marylin Diptych.

                                                           COLOUR INSPIRATION

                                                              MARYLIN DIPTYCH

Andy Warhol made this painting of Marylin Monroe shortly after she died in 1962. The medium used to make this painting was silkscreen ink and acrylic paint on two canvases. According to Tate(1962), The picture used for this artwork was a publicity photo in the film Niagara she acted in in the year 1952. The contrast between the coloured side and the grey scale depicts the difference between her on-screen character and her personal life ( Tate,1962).

This piece is one of the most iconic pop art pieces made by Andy Warhol due to how prominent Marylin Monroe was and the message this piece sends out which I mentioned earlier being the contrast between the star's life on camera and her personal life. On-screen, Marylin seemed full of life and joy but behind the scenes went through a lot of turmoil, stress and struggles. Hence, I picked out some of the colours in the palette used for this artwork. Yellow was used to portray her blonde hair, red was used for lipstick, blue was used for her eye shadow makeup and pink was used for her skin tone. On the greyscale side, I picked out the colour white to use for the main colour of the building.

I used a wide array of colours for the curved glass windows as well as sections of the walls around the building

The white in the grey scale was used to represent the main colour of the art gallery which is a faded white made with limestone.
