SERPENTINE GALLERY BY JEAN NOUVEL

SERPENTINE GALLERY The Serpentine galleries are a set of galleries opened to the public at specific times during the year. The 2010 edition was designed by Jean Nouvel and was opened from the 10th of July 2010 to the 17th of October of the same year. The gallery was built in Hyde Park which is located in London. Placing this Pavilion in Hyde Park was a superb decision. This is because the gallery was only opened temporarily during the summer. Therefore, the striking red colour of the structure would easily attract passersby who are enjoying the warm summer weather. The red colour of the gallery compliments the green summer grass giving Hyde Park a highlighted spot during that period The pavilion housed French outdoor table tennis, a cafe which people could visit during the day as well as the night, as well as the indoor space for public seminars as well as art-related events. Visitors were also provided with draughts chess and frisbee kits which they could play with as a form of leisure to fully utilize the euphoric summer weather. The Pavilion was constructed from polycarbonate, glass as well as fabric structures made up of cantilevered parts and retractable awnings. The cantilevered parts are what hold up the structure to prevent it from falling. A retractable awning is the red canopy which is a part of the building that can be retracted to allow sunlight to penetrate through the building or be used to cover the opening in the building depending on the event taking place. WHY IS THE SERPENTINE GALLERY RELEVANT TO MY ART PORTFOLIO PROJECT First and foremost, as a reminder, the theme of my project is pop art hence, doing research on the pavilion serves as a source of inspiration for designs in which I will implement in my project. The main feature I captured from this building is the bold use of colour which is a major feature of pop art. The pavilion does not have a wide range of colours because the vibrant red used on every inch of the structure did the job. The striking and bright red easily draws attention and would make passersby more interested in what the building is. Colours are used in pop art to send out a message and to create art or a design which gives positive energy. The pavillion has only one red colour but the contrast the green grass gives provides contrast which produces an outburst of bright colours. To implement this in my project I used about 3 or 4 different colours in my project, red being one of them. I used the colour red because it easily catches attention and since its an art gallery having an array of colours which includes red will give the building a vibrant and vivid exterior. The use of shapes in different forms is also seen in the Red Sun Pavillion. In Pop art shapes are used to either provide contrast, create harmony or create a 3 dimensional form. With regards to the structure of the building, a rectangular shape was used but in different sizes and forms. This for me creates a space where different proportioned shapes exist in harmony. A picture of the use of rectangular shapes in different sizes for the construction of the red sun pavillion With regards to the furniture, he used chairs with rounded edges as well as straight edges which provides a variety. The chairs have a button-like look and the red tables with square edges give off animated imagery. Finally the pavilion retractable awning is something to write home about. The pavilion has overhead canopies that can be retracted to allow sunlight to penetrate or these retractable awnings can be closed if the radiation and heat overhead do not fit the event being held at that moment. I will implement it in my building design by placing retractable awnings at the roof top of my gallery. The canopy will be opened up during summer when temperatures are warm and it will be used to cover the roof top during spring ,fall and winter when rain and snow is prominent. This will also be done to enable the rooftop to be used no matter what the weather is. In the case of strong rain and wind, even with the canopy, the indoor spaces will be used to hold events because the life of visitors must not be put at stake To conclude this gallery has given me insight into the features that can be used to elevate the design of a building. Which are colour, shape and form. REFERENCES Nouvel, J. (2010) Serpentine gallery - the red sun pavilion, Ateliers Jean Nouvel.
